Outside of the inner city area, there are many scenic bike paths that can help you to discover a different aspect of the city. A popular route is the River Torrens Bike Path, which takes from Henley Beach along a 35 kilometre stretch of bike path through the inner city to the foot of the Adelaide Hills. This path is suitable for all fitness levels and families who want to ride together too, since there are no challenging hills or obstacles along the way. Packing a picnic to enjoy at a scenic rest stop along the way is a relaxing way to spend a morning.
Coastal Bike Route
There is a coastal cycle path that stretches from Henley Beach down to Glenelg is superb for a lazy peddle session stopping off here and there for a bite to eat or to explore the beach. The sea breeze and the relaxed setting make this a totally pleasant cycling experience and it is suitable for all fitness levels.
Follow the Sturt River
The Sturt River Linear Park has a 5 kilometre stretch of bike path that follows the path of the Sturt River. Along the way there are plenty of historic sites and buildings such as Cobham Hall, which dates to 1841 and is one of the oldest buildings in the state. At the Everest Avenue Reserve along the trail there are large clusters of native trees and plant life that attract flocks of rainbow coloured lorikeets and sulphur crested cockatoos to feed – the best time to see them is in the afternoon. The nearby Warriparringa Wetlands can also be visited while cycling this path and features two hectares with boardwalks guiding you through wetlands and native mangrove vegetation.
Bikedirect is a government sponsored initiative that has developed a range of maps and routes all throughout the Adelaide metropolitan area in order to encourage cycling around the city. This interactive tool helps you to investigate and plan your cycling tour of the city. There are few better ways for you to discover Adelaide than by strapping on a helmet and climbing into the saddle of a bicycle. Seeing the city from your bicycle allows you to explore the city at close range and thanks to most major roads having designated bike paths, riding is safe and relaxing.
